From Sydney, Australia
- Working as the only waitress in a suburban Chinese restaurant on the slowest three nights of the week (Sunday, Monday and Thursday)
usually meant lots of MaJong and mucking around with the cooks.
However one particular Sunday night it was almost busy, and these two truckies stopped by on their way to Melbourne (or so they told me).
They sat next to the partition (behind which was the entry door), ordered and ate their meal, then asked for a doggy bag.
Being the only waitstaff on that night and having 6 tables throughout the restaurant to monitor it's not surprising I didn't see them take off without
paying until too late.
I felt awful.
I went and told the owner (out the back playing poker with the chefs)
and he was pretty upset as you can imagine.
However, as I cleared the table I found....A WALLET!
Ha! With I.D, Driver's licence and copies of his truck's registration papers, credit cards, and $300.00 in cash.
The owner took the EXACT amount for the food they ate plus gave me a $10 tip, stamped the bill "paid" and stuck it in the wallet, putting it under the counter to await collection.
You can imagine the distressed look on the guy's face when he came in (as we were closing up) to collect his wallet.
The owner and I just looked at him and smiled.
First, I wish I had a camera to capture his look,
Second, the owner and I nearly gave ourselves hernias after laughing so hard.
Do you have a great restaurant story you would like to share?
